Discolored Water

Water Discoloration After Maintenance

If you notice your tap water still looking cloudy, brownish, or rusty after the recent water system maintenance, don’t panic—this is normal and temporary.

Why it happens:

When the municipal water system is turned off and then back on for maintenance, the change in pressure can stir up harmless sediments (like minerals and iron) that naturally settle inside water lines over time. Once service is restored, those sediments can move through the pipes and discolor the water.

What to know:

  • The discoloration is not unusual after maintenance.
  • It typically clears up as the water lines flush themselves out.
  • The City understands how concerning and frustrating this can be. If there were a way to prevent it entirely, we would absolutely do so—but some sediment movement is unavoidable in these situations.

Important reminder:

Please do not call 911 for water discoloration issues. Our police and fire departments do not have the ability to address water system concerns, and keeping emergency lines open helps ensure they’re available for true emergencies.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to maintain and improve our water system for everyone in order to prevent this from happening again.
